What happens at your first session with a psychologist
What the first consultation looks like, how long it lasts and how to prepare — in plain words.
A conversation, not an exam
The first session is for getting to know each other. The psychologist will ask what brought you, how long it has been going on and what you would like. Answer in your own words — there are no “right” answers.
You do not have to tell everything at once. If something is hard to talk about yet, just say so.
How long it lasts
Usually about 50 minutes; a session for two is longer. Length and price are shown on the profile before you book.
At the start you often agree on how often to meet, how to reschedule and what stays confidential. This is a normal part of the work.
How to prepare
A couple of thoughts are enough: what troubles you and what you would like to change. You can write them down beforehand.
For an online session, find a quiet private place and check your connection a few minutes early.
Afterwards
Ask yourself whether you felt calm and understood. One session is too early for results, but enough to sense whether you are comfortable with this person.
